Most people think “permanent” means lasting forever. Regrettably, what is advertised is not always true.

It’s not easy to criticizeassess a new method of hair removal that advertises itself as a permanent one. Most people only see that after some time has passed, it’s hardly believable that hair will actuelly never regrow. This is why generally there’s a certain explanation of “permanent.” Some of these definitions seem inadequate. One manufacturer claims their device is permanent based on seeing results after a certain number of weeks. That’s ridiculous. Hair removal cream or waxing also give these results, and this is ofcourse temporary.

For the desirable results of hair removal, “permanent” means not having to use another method of hair removal for at least a year after your last hair removal treatment. Mind you, a year might not be long enough to be sure the treatment is permanent, but probably most people would be happy to have one yearly treatment.

A more unclear advertised method is “long-term” hair removal. Just remember that it all depends on what you think “long-trem” really indicates. For the desirable results of long-term hair removal one should not have to use another treatment until 6 months after the last treatment. Nine weeks should not be concidered long-term, but definitions are different for everyone. Logically 6 months could be concidered long-term hair removal, because one hair growth cycle takes about 6 months to complete.

A newly used term in hair removal is “Semi-permanent hair removal”. Laser hair removal results are claimed to be semi-permanent in the hair salon industry, but “lasting a few weeks” is more likely to be the actual results.

A select number of devices for laser hair removal at home, officially approved and recognized by FDA (Food and Drug Administration), have proven to result in permanent hair reduction according to clinical studies. Hair reduction is interpreted as stable decrease in the amount of thick dark hair. In clinical tests some hair removal lasers have demonstrated that they can reduce the size and give hair a brighter color. This reduction has a permanent result in some cases.

Is laser hair removal permanent ? Not likely, but it’s definately a way to permanently reduce hairgrowth. The only way to remove hair permanently is through electrolysis. There are a few flash lamps and lasers that have been able to accomplish permanent hair growth reduction.

Only the complete destruction of hair follicles can result in Permanent hair removal. This way the follicles completely lose the ability to regenerate, so hair just won’t grow back.

It’s summertime, and because I am not a supermodel with a lot of extra vacation time on my hands, my tan is uneven and barely developed and it makes me feel a little insecure. My nose is so much darker than the rest of me, I feel like a reindeer in photos. I have to wear long pants to work and work for so long that, when I go running at night or early in the evening, my legs get no contact from the sun. So my big pet peeve about my body this summer is how un-summerlike it looks. So I’m looking into self-tanners, and wanted to share some of the knowledge with you.

Of course, self-tanners boast other healthy benefits as well: you can get the same results as laying out in the sun all day, minus all the risks of skin cancer. We all know the drill: it makes me cringe to watch girls lathering up with baby oil on the beach like my aunt used to do in the ’70s before they knew about skin cancer and sunscreen. I cringe almost as much as I do when I watch reruns of “Mad Men,” when January Jones’s character drinks and smokes while pregnant. It’s wrong by today’s standards, and totally a sign of the times. Ignorance of the destructive properties of tanning, though, is inexcusable.

1. L’Oreal Sublime Glow for the Body

Rating:
Price: 9/10
Color: 7/10
Smell: 6/10

L’Oreal Sublime Glow is an inexpensive but name brand tanner that delivers satisfying results. You apply the product over the course of several days, and can substitute it for your moisturizing treatment. Consumers rave about the shimmer it leaves behind, and the smell got mixed reviews. But at around $10 a bottle, this is quite a steal!

2. Laura Mercier Bronzing Gel for the Face

Rating:
Price: 6/10
Color: 8/10
Smell: 7/10

This is a bit pricier than the last product, but boasts a whole new terrain: Mercier’s Bronzing Gel is entirely meant to enhance the tan on your face. Usually I wouldn’t have the guts to put self-tanner on my face, but listen up: Mercier has gotten pretty close to perfection. It’s a bit pricey (averaging between $30-$40 on the market) but leaves a just-after tanning rosy glow that I thought could only be achieved after a hard workout or day the beach: but now the shimmer and glow can be bought. I’m sold!

Waxing your eyebrows is difficult, and I think all of us want to leave it to the professionals. I’m always wary of waxing my eyebrows, since if you do it wrong, everyone is going to see! I mostly prefer to wax every two weeks and tweeze in between to keep the evil hairs at bay, but after watching this video, I’m a little more soothed.

If you have the right products and go slowly and steadily, you could easily have a friend you trust do your eyebrows, and I could do her’s in exchange.

Wondering what’s so simple about this? Let’s take a look at the video, and review the steps and products necessary to make at-home eyebrow waxing a cinch.

Supplies you Need: rubbing alcohol, baby powder, toner or astringent, aloe vera, cotton balls, an at-home waxing kit and strips to do this at home.

[There is a video that cannot be displayed in this feed. Visit the blog entry to see the video.]

Prepping the Area:

1. Sanitize your hands and the area. Wear gloves if you can.
2. Remove all oils and dirt. So take a cotton ball, put some of the toner and astringent on it, and wipe the area. Next us the baby powder to dab onto the eyebrows and cleaned area to dry it out.
3. Check the consistency of the wax: you don’t want it to be too thick or thin.
4. Once it’s the right consistency, put a stick into the wax and apply a very thin layer (going in the direction the hair grows) across the area you would like the waax.
5. Then apply a strip to the area, pushing down in the direction you applied the wax.
6. To remove the strip, hold the skin taught on the forehead, and pull the strip down and against the growth of the hair.
7. If there’s any wax left, remove leftover wax with the toner and cotton ball.
8. To soothe the area you want to use aloe vera: again us cotton ball for application.

See? So simple! Again, I caution trying this on yourself, since you will be temporarily blinding yourself with the strips when doing the part under your brows. So grab a friend who’s also tired of shelling out the money for beauty salon waxing, and you can make a date out of it.
