Protect the Skin You’re in This Summer
Summer is in full swing, and sunburns are happening everywhere. Over the weekend, three of my fabulous friends found themselves on the losing end of the battle against the sun’s delicious, yet damaging rays. Don’t be the next gal in
line at the local drugstore craving some ice and aloe vera.
Ultraviolet (UV) rays are the strong, naughty rays that can harm your skin. Ultraviolet radiation (UVA and UVB rays) can cause at the very least a nasty sunburn and at worst skin cancer and blindness. You don’t want to play roulette with these bad-boys, because the risks are huge. Protection is simple and should be used whenever you’re basking in the glorious summer sun.
If you’re a summer-loving, outdoorsy girl, you’re probably well-acquainted with the need for protective sunscreen. Keeping your skin healthy is important and you should always wear a sun block with an SPF of at least 15 for daily use and 30 for prolonged sun exposure.
Cloudy days are no exception. The sun’s UV rays are powerful and many an unsuspecting individual has been victimized on an overcast day. Your skin isn’t the only thing you should remember to apply some sun protection to. Your lips and eyes are highly vulnerable areas and need some TLC too.
When you’re outside, make sure to wear UV blocking sunglasses. All eyewear is NOT created equally. Just because a pair of shades has a dark tint, doesn’t mean that your peepers are protected from ultraviolet rays. When shopping, look for sunglasses that are specifically labeled for 100% UV protection. If you wear vision-correcting glasses, you can have the lenses treated for protection from the sun, too.
Don’t forget your kisser. Besides burning, unprotected sun exposure can lead to some mean cold sores. Use a lip gloss or balm that is marked with an SPF of 15 or greater. And yes, I said lip gloss. If you want a nice tint to your lips without worrying about a sore, sun burnt smacker, there are options in all different shades.
Sun-worshippers can enjoy rays without compromising safety. Following these basic guidelines will keep your skin beautiful and burn-free. Cover up with the appropriate sun protection and you can enjoy all of the sunshiney delights that summer has to offer.
